Located on the Isle of Lewis, Stornoway Airport provides a key access point to the Western Isles, with flights from Inverness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow as well as inter-Island services.
With more than 8000 residents, Stornoway is the largest town in the Hebrides, and home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (The Western Isles Council).
The airport provides a key access point to Lewis, Harris and the wider Outer Hebrides Archipelago, providing lifeline services for tourism, business and medical services. The airport has a cafe serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, rolls, light meals, snacks and cakes.
More Tourist Information
Originally a Viking settlement, Stornoway developed around its well sheltered natural harbour. Today the harbour hosts a fishing fleet, a small marina and three larger piers for commercial traffic.
Parts of the town centre have been pedestrianised and provide good access to an interesting range of shops and restaurants. Other places to visit within easy reach are The Shawbost Folk Museum, and Callanish Standing Stones.
The islands provide the perfect haven for a range of wildlife. At the coast, you may catch a glimpse of whales or dolphins, or find seals in the harbours and on the beaches. Inland, ospreys, golden eagles and sea eagles can be spotted.
The world-renowned Harris Tweed brand has been woven in the same manner for over a hundred years, by hand in individual loom sheds on the islands.
Foodies will love the fresh seafood – and its far-famed Stornoway Black Pudding.
Not everywhere is open on Sundays on the islands so do check locally to help plan your trip.
The island’s main tourist information can be found in Stornoway town centre and the airport information desk offers local advice, maps and leaflets. More information can be found at Visit Outer Hebrides or VisitScotland.com.
