Wick John O’Groats Airport’s military heritage and role in the local community is the focus for an article in the latest edition of the official magazine of the Airport Operators Association.
The feature describes how the airfield played a key role in wartime operations to prevent enemy invasion, due to its remote coastal location. Several significant flights took place from the airport, including the reconnaissance flight by Flying Officer Michael F. Suckling, who flew to Norway and captured photos of the German battleship “Bismarck” on 21 May 1941 which became a major propaganda for Britain.
