Passengers travelling through Barra airport will be able to enjoy a menu of meals, snacks and drinks from Tuesday 3 December as the new cafe opens.
Seonaidh Morrison, a native to Barra, is the new café operator and said: “Delicious, seasonal food using local ingredients will be the key to the menu.”
Having recently moved back to the island from Cornwall, the chef added: “I’m looking forward to creating a menu of tasty snacks and meals, along with a selection of hot and cold drinks not just for passengers travelling through the airport but also to be enjoyed by the local community”.
The menu will include full breakfasts, toasties, filled rolls, cakes and hot drinks, plus regularly changing specials such as Roasted Butternut Squash and Farro Salad with pesto, crispy kale and a balsamic glaze, Pulled pork loaded fries, Smoked haddock rarebit and Barra Burritos to name just a few.
The development of the café space was part of a significant investment to extend and refurbish the terminal building by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) to improve the passenger experience. The works included the installation of a new commercial catering kitchen along with an improved seating area with views out across the world-famous beach where aircraft land and take off. A new entrance to the terminal building, new toilet facilities and check-in and office area were also developed as part of the project.
“It will be great to have a café at the airport again and we’re looking forward to showing off the refurbishment of the terminal. We hope that the café will become a place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy,” said Michael Galbraith, Airport Manager at Barra.
