Duncan Smith, General Manager at Stornoway Airport, has retired following an 18 year career at Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL).
Duncan joined HIAL in March 2007 as Airport Manager, becoming General Manager in 2020.
Looking back on his career at HIAL, Duncan said: “I remember having a lot to learn at the beginning and I have seen great changes during my career. My greatest memories are of the fantastic team that I have worked with, as well as the happiness that being part of the community has given me.”
Over the years, Duncan was involved in several major investment projects at the airport, including the resurfacing of the main runway and the recent coastal erosion project.
A keen football fan, Duncan is keen to make use of his season ticket for Manchester United to watch games with his eldest son. Music is his main hobby, from encouraging bands to play in Stornoway to watching his favourite performer, Bruce Springsteen.
Duncan added: “I'm looking forward to enjoying a dram of the local Hearach whisky to mark the start of the next stage of my life and also having more time to spend with my family.”
Geordie Farquhar, Director of Airport Operations at HIAL, said: “I would like to thank Duncan for his many years of service at HIAL. Duncan is a well-known member of the community at Stornoway and we wish him well with his retirement."
Graeme Bell, General Manager at Inverness Airport, will provide oversight for Benbecula and Stornoway, with Willie Mutch, Airport Operations and Fire Manager, providing line management for the airport team at Stornoway.
